This stunning hand painted Russian Santa and Mrs. Claus set is hand carved and hand painted by the artist creating these amazing statuettes! Both Santa and Mrs. Claus's cloaks are beautifully hand painted with a gorgeous floral and paisley pattern in light purples (or lilacs or lavenders) with orange and green flowers and leaves as well as golds, whites and gold glitter and highlights. Santa is holding a decorated walking staff in one hand and is balancing a toy pack on his shoulder. The toy pack is painted in tans and grays with a floral and paisley pattern matching his cloak. Mrs. Claus (or Snowmaiden or Snow Maiden) is dressed in a traditional gown and cloak with a traditional headdress. She has rosey cheeks and a sweet expression on her face. This Santa and Mrs. Claus are painted with a unique style called “Abramtsova”. This technique is extremely rare and time consuming. It requires the artist to paint a layer of clear frosted paint then quickly remove a portion of the paint before it is dry. This creates a frosted layer over the previous layer of paint giving an iridescent look. Currently, Natasha, the artist who painted these Statuettes, is the only artist we know of using the Abramtsova technique. SEE CLOSE UP PICTURES BELOW. Both Santa and Mrs. Claus are lightly lacquered so they are easily cleaned and protected. The solid linden wood is dried for almost 2 years before it is carved so it will last a lifetime. Linden wood was once used to make drafting boards because it is so stable once it is properly dried. It does not warp, change shape, or crack and this artistic piece will bring enjoyment for a lifetime! (Note: These are not molded or mass produced as are some molded resin Santas from China. All our Russian Santas and statuettes are one of a kind, unique, and hand carved from Linden Wood and no two are ever identical!) This Grandfather Frost and Snow Maiden are made in Sergei Posad, Russia, and are signed by the artist. The Santa measures just over 10.25 inches tall by 6 inches wide and Mrs. Claus measures just under 10 inches tall by 5.75 inches wide.
