This Russian Santa Claus is beautifully hand carved and hand painted by the artist to enhance details in the Santa, his costume and overcoat, his boots, staff, and the pocket watch he is holding. Santa's cloak is painted in reds and golds and is covered with little white, red, gold and bronze raised dots of paint that give a raised texture and the impression of jewels adorning his cap, cloak and costume. Santa is holding a pocket watch which is showing 5 minutes before midnight - remember, in Russia, Santa comes at midnight on New Year's Eve bringing toys and gifts to all the good little children and in the US he comes down the chimney at the stroke of midnight with gifts, hoping for milk and cookies left by those good little children! The details of this statue are amazing! (SEE CLOSE UP PICTURES BELOW!) This statue is lightly lacquered so it is easily cleaned and protected. The solid linden wood is dried for almost 2 years before it is carved so it will last a lifetime. Linden wood was once used to make drafting boards because it is so stable once it is properly dried. It does not warp, change shape, or crack and this artistic piece will bring enjoyment for a lifetime! (Please Note: These are not molded or mass produced as are some molded resin Santas from China. All Russian Santas are hand carved from Linden Wood and no two are ever identical!) This Grandfather Frost, as he is called in Russia, is made in Sergei Posad, Russia and is signed by the artist and measures approximately 15 inches tall by 8.25 inches wide.
