This lovely hand painted KOHULI Russian lacquer box depicts scenes from THE RUSSIAN NORTH. The scene is beautifully detailed showing the sun in the middle, the swans of the north, the wooden Orthodox churches along with their traditional Onion Domes, as well as homes and cabins of the Russian North. Russian lacquer boxes are famous for the many layers of painting and the layers of lacquer between each layer of painting. These numerous layers give the 3D impression of depth. Some boxes have over 10 layers of lacquer between the layers of paint. This amazing box measures approximately 6 inches in diameter by just over 1.25 inches high. The style of painting - KOHULI, the title of the box - THE NORTH, and the artist’s signature are all painted along the bottom of the box - see close up pictures below.
