This wonderful hand painted Russian Santa Claus has amazing details in the face, beard, costume, and scene. Santa is holding a staff decorated with birds sitting on bare tree boughs and with his other hand is holding his toy pack which is thrown over his shoulder. The scene on the front of Santa's cloak is that of a young girl sitting on a tree stump while Grandfather Frost shows her a treasure chest full of treasure! They are in a snowy forest, surrounded by birds, in the midst of a long Siberian winter!! Santa's blue cloak is beautifully painted with a gorgeous floral pattern and is highlighted with white and gold and is accented with dots of gold glitter. This Santa is painted with a unique style called “Abramtsova”. This technique is extremely rare and time consuming. It requires the artist to paint a layer of clear frosted paint then quickly removing a portion of the paint before it is dry. This creates a frost layering over the previous layer of paint giving an iridescent look. Currently, Natasha, the artist who painted this Santa, is the only artist we know of using the Abramtsova technique. SEE CLOSE UP PICTURES BELOW. This Santa is lightly lacquered so it is easily cleaned and protected. The solid linden wood is dried for almost 2 years before it is carved so it will last a lifetime. Linden wood was once used to make drafting boards because it is so stable once it is properly dried. It does not warp, change shape, or crack and this artistic piece will bring enjoyment for a lifetime! Please Note: These are not molded or mass produced as are some molded resin Santas from China. This Santa (or Grandfather Frost as he is called in Russia) is made in Sergei Posad, Russia and is signed by the artist. It measures just over 10.5 inches tall by 6.25 inches wide.
