This gorgeous Russian hand painted lacquer box is inlaid with Mother of Pearl. The scene is that of the Moscow Kremlin and the iconic St. Basil's Cathedral along with its famous colorful Onion Domes. The Mother of Pearl is inlaid into the papier-mache lid before painting and can be seen in the sky, behind the buildings looking like colorful clouds in the sky. The Mother of Pearl is also behind the snow beneath St Basil's looking as if the sun were sparkling off the snow. This fabulous box also has another scene painted on the inside of the lid - that of The Cathedral of the Archangel as well as Ivan the Great Bell Tower. Russian lacquer boxes are famous for the many layers of painting and the layers of lacquer between each layer of painting. These numerous layers give the 3D impression of depth. Some boxes have over 10 layers of lacquer between the layers of paint. This beautifully detailed box is hand painted and signed by the artist. The colors are fabulous and the light reflects wonderfully off the Mother of Pearl creating a rainbow of color! (Please see close-up pictures below - pictures have been taken at different angles and in different lights to show the reflection of the mother of pearl more clearly.) Along the bottom of this box, the title - MOSKVA as well as the artist's signature are painted. This box measures approximately 4.75 inches by 3.25 inches by just over 2 inches deep.
