This brightly colored Russian Santa Claus is hand carved and hand painted in reds, golds, and whites on both the front and back of his cloak with blue, green, red, gold and white highlights. The artist has painted thick, raised dots of paint giving Santa's cloak a raised texture. Notice the pocket watch hanging just below his sash or belt. The time on the clock is five minutes to midnight - remember that in Russia, Santa Claus or Grandfather Frost (Ded Moroz) comes on New Year's Eve bringing gifts to the good little children at the stroke of midnight. The little angel that he is holding has such a heavenly expression on her face! (SEE CLOSE UP PICTURES BELOW.) This statuette is lacquered so it is easily cleaned and protected. The solid linden wood is dried for almost 2 years before it is carved so it will last a lifetime. Linden wood was once used to make drafting boards because it is so stable once it is properly dried. It does not warp, change shape, or crack and this artistic piece will bring enjoyment for a lifetime! (Note: These are not molded or mass produced as are some molded resin Santas from China. All our Russian Santas are hand carved from Linden Wood and no two are ever identical!) This Grandfather Frost (as he is called in Russia) is made in Sergei Posad, Russia and is signed by the artist. The Santa measures approximately 9.75 inches tall by 4.25 inches wide.
